ELMS BARN PROJECT
Carl and Liz came to Chapel Lane Furniture with a clear ambition: to transform the dated kitchen in their beautiful barn conversion overlooking the Stour Valley in Suffolk. The property is defined by its original oak beams, which give the home much of its character and warmth. Liz had always dreamed of creating a kitchen that respected the heritage of the building while introducing a more elegant and sophisticated feel.
The brief was to design and build a traditional bespoke kitchen in Suffolk that combined timeless craftsmanship with the practical requirements of modern family life. At the heart of the design was a Bertazzoni range cooker – something Carl had always wanted and which became a natural focal point for the room.

Working closely with Liz throughout the design process, we developed a kitchen that reflected her refined aesthetic while giving Carl the ideal environment to enjoy his passion for cooking.
DESIgning arouND THE ORIGINAL OAK BEAMS
Our starting point was the architecture of the barn itself. Rather than competing with the original oak beams, we designed the kitchen to complement them, allowing these beautiful structural features to remain a defining part of the space.
The existing kitchen featured a substantial chimney breast, which made the room feel heavier and more enclosed. Removing this allowed us to rethink the layout and create a much more open and balanced kitchen.
In its place, we introduced a sleek, integrated canopy positioned higher within the room. This helped to create a feeling of greater height and openness while providing a refined setting for the Bertazzoni range cooker.
The result is a kitchen that feels naturally connected to the architecture of the barn rather than being imposed upon it.
Bespoke Cabinetry and Elegant Quartz Worktops
Liz wanted the worktops to make a real statement, and we selected an intricate marble-effect quartz to provide the sophisticated finish she had envisioned.
The quartz was continued up the walls to form a striking splashback, creating a seamless transition between the work surfaces and cabinetry. This continuous use of material gives the kitchen a sense of cohesion and adds a luxurious quality without compromising the warmth of the traditional setting.
The bespoke kitchen cabinetry was carefully designed to provide generous, practical storage while maintaining the understated elegance of the room. Refined detailing and traditional influences give the furniture a timeless character, ensuring that it sits comfortably within the historic barn conversion.
Every element was considered in relation to the proportions of the room, the existing oak and the views across the Stour Valley.
A Bespoke Drinks Cabinet for Entertaining
Across the room, we designed and built a bespoke drinks cabinet, adding another layer of functionality and personality to the space.
Designed with entertaining in mind, the cabinet provides a dedicated area for drinks while complementing the main kitchen furniture. It is a small but important detail that helps the room work just as beautifully for relaxed evenings with family as it does for entertaining guests.

The finished kitchen brings together traditional craftsmanship, elegant materials and carefully considered modern functionality.
The original oak beams remain at the heart of the space, while the bespoke cabinetry, marble-effect quartz and Bertazzoni range create a sophisticated new layer within the barn.
For Carl, the kitchen provides the perfect setting to enjoy his passion for cooking. For Liz, it delivers the elegant and timeless space she had imagined.
Most importantly, the new kitchen feels as though it belongs in the building – respecting the character of the original barn while giving the room a fresh sense of luxury and purpose.
